Last Friday, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA), unveiled the company's business plan for the next five years, his last move before his expected retirement at the end of the year.
The plan highlights a strategy to make the Jeep, Ram, Maserati and Alfa Romeo brands the main focus of FCA as those are the most profitable in the portfolio of the Italian-American automaker.
Marchionne also unveiled FCA’s first road map to electrification with a US$ 10.5 billion investment to add electrified options to more than 30 models across four brands by 2022.
But what’s in it for Mexico?
According to the product plan for the RAM brand, there’s a new midsize pickup coming to North America by 2022 to compete with the likes of the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Tacoma and the Chevrolet Colorado.
The model will be built in Saltillo, Coahuila on the old Ram Heavy Duty production line which is shifting to Michigan. It’s still unclear if the company will revive the Dakota nameplate, whose production ended in 2011.
FCA already announced plans to build a “global vehicle” in the Saltillo plant which currently makes the outgoing version of the RAM pickup, but no further details have been revealed.
The company currently sells a small pickup named Ram 1200 in several countries, which is a rebadged version of a Mitsubishi pickup, but company officials promptly made clear the new truck will not be a version of this existing vehicle.
