Here’s how sales of built-in-Mexico cars performed in the US during April

Auto sales for vehicles built in Mexico saw a mixed performance over the U.S. market during April, with compact units leading the fall except for a few cases like the Kia Forte, which reported the highest monthly sales total in company history for the family of compact cars. The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle from certain model was built in the country. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Ford

Ford Motor Company’s overall U.S. April 2017 sales declined 7.2% compared to a year ago, with 214,695 vehicles sold. 

The oval logo sold 3,329 Ford Fiestas, 25.4% less than the 4,462 units sold the month of 2016. During the first four months of 2017 the Fiesta sales totaled 16,373, a figure 6.8% higher than the 15,325 units sold the same period of 2016.

The Ford Fusion joined the fall with 16,697 cars sold, 19.5% less than the 20,730 vehicles on April 2016. From January to April 2017 Fusion sales totaled 67,483 units, 29.5% less than a year ago.

The Lincoln MKZ was Ford’s only built-in-Mexico car to increase its sales in April to 2,658 units, up 24.8% compared to last year. Total sales from January to April reached 9,301 vehicles, also a 7.1% increase.

GM

General Motors reported April sales of 244,406 crossovers, trucks and cars, a 5.8% dip despite strong crossover sales at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. 

In April, Chevrolet dealers delivered the first 4,500 redesigned 2018 Chevy Equinox compact crossovers with the 1.5L turbo engine.

Silverado sales decreased 19.68% to 40,154 units, GMC Sierra sales decreased 15.25% to 17,400 units, Sonic sales decreased 67.76% to 1,645 units. 

On the bright side the Chevrolet Trax sales increased 44.32% to 6,509 units and the Cruze sales hiked 50.62% to 21,317 units.

FCA 

FCA US reported sales of 177,441 units, a 7% decrease compared with sales of 190,071 units in April 2016. Sales for the Jeep Compass totaled 3,520 units during the second month since it started arriving to auto dealerships.

The Dodge Journey extended the strong performance from last month and sold 8,401 units, a 72% hike compared to April 2016. Ram pickup sales increased 8% to 43,321 units, while the Fiat 500 sales fell 20% to 1,201 units.

Audi

Audi of America’s April sales increased 5% to 18,711 vehicles, a record. Demand was strong across the product lineup, with the Q5, Q7 SUVs and the A4 sedan leading the volume gains. It was the best April sales result for Audi in the U.S., marking the brand’s 76th straight monthly record. The newly launched Q5 led the gains with 5,028 vehicles sold, an increase of 26%.

Toyota 

Toyota Motor North America reported its U.S. April 2017 sales of 201,926 units, a decrease of 4.4% from April 2016 on a volume basis. 

The midsize pickup Tacoma, which is built in San Antonio and Baja California, Mexico, saw sales fall 6.1% to 17,006 vehicles, in April. For the year, Tacoma sales are down 3.5% to 60,499 units. 

The Yaris iA, which is built by Mazda in Guanajuato, was the only Toyota car model to post an increase in April to 3,479 units, up 15.1% compared to last year.

Honda 

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported April sales of 138,386 Honda and Acura vehicles, a decrease of 7.0% from year-ago results. However, the compact crossover HR-V set a new record, rising 22.4% on sales of 8,527 vehicles. 

The compact hatchback Fit did not perform so well, totaling 4,871 units, 5.1% down compared to same month 2016. 

Over the first four months, sales for the HR-V totaled 28,223 units and 16,773 for the Fit, which represented increases of 25.5% and 0.8% respectively.

Nissan 

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for April 2017 of 121,998 units, a decrease of 1.5% over the prior year. 

Nissan sold 8,322 vehicles of its Versa compact car, including sedan and the hatchback version known as Versa Note, a 9.2% decrease compared to April 2016. Year-to-date sales for the Versa totaled 39,397 units, down 13.7%. 

As for the Nissan Sentra 20,255 units were sold in April, up 5.8%. Year-to-date sales totaled 71,669 vehicles, 12.7% down compared to first four months of 2016.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen of America reported sales of 27,557 units delivered in April 2017, a 1.6% increase over April 2016. The whole Golf family saw a strong performance with monthly sales of 7,187 vehicles, while year-to-date sales totaled 25,164 units, up 40.7% and 46% respectively. 

On the other hand, the Jetta saw a 12.1% decrease to 9,398 vehicles in April, while year-to-date sales totaled 33,961 cars and a 12.3% drop. 

VW sold 1,497 Beetle cars in April and totaled 5,405 vehicles to date, meaning increases of 27.8% and 20.4% respectively.

Sales for the Tiguan SUV totaled 2,939 units in April, 22.7% less than the 3,804 vehicles the previous year. Year-to-date sales reached 13,150 units, up 0.4% from the 13,096 vehicles the same period of 2016.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations reported April U.S. sales of 24,164 vehicles, representing a decrease of 7.8% versus April of last year. Year-to-date sales through April are up 2.6% versus last year, with 93,235 vehicles sold. 

Sales for the Mazda3 totaled 5,980 units in April, down 44.2%, while year-to-date sales reached 26,586 vehicles, 19.1% less than same four-month period of 2016. The company combines sedan and hatchback sales for the Mazda3 in its report, but only the saloon version is built in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Kia/Hyundai

Kia Motors America announced April sales of 53,358 units in the U.S. market, 5.6% less than the 56,508 vehicles the year before. Meanwhile its sister brand Hyundai totaled 63,050 vehicles, an overall increase of 1.3%. 

The Kia Forte, built in Nuevo Leon, reported the highest monthly sales total in company history for the family of compact cars with 10,496 units, a 7.7% increase compared to the 9,740 the year before.

On the opposite side, the Kia Rio saw sales drop to 1,463 units, 42% less than the 2,523 vehicles from a year ago. The Hyundai Accent, also built in Nuevo Leon, reported 6,951 units sold, 46.2% less than the 12,933 vehicles from April 2016.
