Report: Mercedes-Benz to build sedans, crossovers at Mexican plant

Aside from its all-new A Class compact sedan, Mercedes-Benz plans to produce a seven-passenger crossover utility vehicle (CUV) at its new plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, which will start operations later this year. This according to a new report by AutoNews.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB family vehicle will be built on the same MFA2 platform used by the brand for other small front-wheel-drive vehicles, but it will supposedly feature all-wheel drive.

“The A-class sedan and GLB will give Mercedes two new vehicles in the U.S. targeting younger buyers. The GLB is expected to be priced higher than the A class and GLA but still in the mid-to-upper US$ 30,000s,” says the report.

The COMPAS plant (Cooperation Manufacturing Plant Aguascalientes) is a production facility built in joint venture with Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti, which already manufactures its QX50 SUV in there.

Infiniti is also in the works to build a second model at the Mexican facility, according to a company official who declined to give further details.
