Mazda Motor Corporation announced that the Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends Report, released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Jan. 12, 2018, lists the company as having the highest overall Manufacturer Adjusted Fuel Economy for the 2016 model year. Mazda receives the first-place ranking for the fifth year in a row.

The EPA’s report summarizes fuel economy trends by model year for vehicles sold in the U.S. and ranks automakers by Manufacturer Adjusted Fuel Economy. Mazda’s overall average fuel economy was 29.6 miles per gallon, improved 0.4 mpg over the previous year.

The company said its SKYACTIV technology, an innovative range of engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis, played a key role in allowing Mazda to record the highest overall average fuel economy five years in a row.

Since 2014, Mazda builds SKYACTIV engines at an US$ 120 million facility in Salamanca, Guanajuato, with an output capacity of 230,000 units a year.

The engine plant is adjacent to the assembly facility that builds Mazda3 and Mazda2 models, the latter also branded as Toyota Yaris iA for the U.S. market, where the Mazda2 is not for sale.

In addition to Mexico, SKYACTIV engines are also manufactured at the Hiroshima Plant in Japan and the Chang'an Ford Mazda Engine Plant in China.
