Among the main countries that provided light cars to the United States in 2017, Mexico was the most dynamic, with a 9.4% growth in exports to that country, surpassing its closest competitors such as Japan, whose exports grew 3.9%, or South Korea and Germany, whose shipments decreased 13.4% and 10.6% respectively, according to data from Ward's Auto, published by the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

As a result of this phenomenon, Mexico also increased its market share in the neighboring country from 12.2% to 13.6%, by providing 2,335,245 vehicles out of the 17,134,733 units that were sold in the U.S. market last year.

During the same period Japan supplied 1,714,382 units to the U.S. market, while South Korea exported 821,338 vehicles and Germany shipped 599,076 cars.

The preference for Mexico-made cars in the United States allowed them to grow their market share even in an adverse scenario, as sales of cars and light trucks fell 1.9% during 2017, according to the figures of Ward's Auto.

But if Mexican exports of cars to the United States performed well, shipments to other destinations were even more outstanding, as they increased 21% to 767,359 units, according to the export report released by the AMIA.

With this, exports to Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania climbed in a consolidated manner, from 22.9 to 24.7% of total foreign sales of cars from Mexico. Reciprocally, the share of exports to the U.S. went down from 77.1 to 75.3%.

The regions that increased the most import of assembled vehicles in Mexico were Africa (+ 493%), Europe (+ 45.2%), Asia (+ 38.1%) and Latin America (+ 18.8%). Among these, the most important market regions were Latin America, where 240,431 units were shipped, and Europe with 168,058 vehicles, leaving Asia in third place with 38,969 cars and Africa with 2,383.

The countries that increased their imports of Mexican cars the most were Italy with a growth of 387.7% and a total of 17,300 vehicles, followed by the increase of 38.5% in Chile with 26,581 cars and 22.2% in Germany with 96,753 cars.
