Report: Ford plans to shift production of Fusion sedan to China

Ford Motor Co plans to shift production of midsize Fusion and Mondeo sedans out of Mexico and Spain, respectively, in 2020 and move it to China, Reuters reported today citing three inner sources.

While Ford didn’t deny its intentions to shift production to China, the company said there’s no plans to export such models from China to North American and European markets.

"Fusion/Mondeo are an important part of the Ford car lineup. We will have more information to share about the next Fusion/Mondeo at a later date," Ford said in a statement.

It is worth noting that Ford builds both the Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ on the same platform in Hermosillo. Both models have seen its sales sink at two-digit pace this year.

Ford Fusion monthly sales totaled 14,901 vehicles in November, down 15.1%, while year-to-date sales fell 22.1% to 192,179 units. The Lincoln MKZ saw its sales sink 23.7% to 1,939 units in November, and decreased 10% to 25,094 vehicles on a year-to-date basis.

The report comes out one week after Ford revealed plans to shift production of an electric crossover with a 300-mile range to the Cuautitlan Stamping and Assembly Plant (CSAP) in Mexico from Michigan in order to make way for additional investments on autonomous vehicles in its home state.
