Multi-sector American technological manufacturer Flex Ltd. officially inaugurated its US$ 39.5 million production site in Zapopan, Jalisco, where the company manufactures high-tech sports shoes for Nike.

The 57,000 square-meter factory already employs 5,000 workers, but is expected to hire an additional 6,000 strong for a total workforce of 11,000 by the end of 2019, according to figures provided by the government of Jalisco.

The plant will be one of the firsts in the industry to feature automated processes for soft materials that are hard to handle by robots, using a groundbreaking technique based on static electricity.

The facility, denominated B29 Building, has its own gas-powered plant to generate 8 MWh of clean power, which implied and additional US$ 9 million investment.

The company employs a total of 44,000 people in Mexico, making up 22% of its global workforce. It first started operations in Jalisco 21 years ago and has grown to become one of the state’s largest private employers.
