Volkswagen to reduce shifts on certain production lines in Puebla facility

Some Volkswagen assembly workers in Puebla, Mexico, will work in reduced shifts starting April 2018 and throughout 2019 to adapt to the production needs of the new Jetta A7, local media reported citing internal documents from the auto workers union.

The company will apply shifts with 1.5 hours less than usual at the 4 KS1 facility following guidelines for the production of the new model, estimated at 990 units per day.

"The company sees the need to produce in small shifts to be able to fulfill the commitments acquired with its customers, but at the same time protecting the jobs of our affiliates", said the union (Sitiavw) through a memo issued on November 22 to the interior of the plant.

The reduction of shifts is based on the German Kurzarbeit scheme, which combines shorter shifts with partial cuts in salary or benefits. On this occasion, the company would have opted to apply the impact on benefits.

The shifts will now have a schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
