France-based manufacturer of glass and building materials Saint-Gobain announced it will break ground on December 4 to build its second glass manufacturing facility at the Alianza-Derramadero industrial park in Saltillo with a US$ 100 million investment.

The new site will manufacture architectural glass. Along with another production site also under construction in Saltillo, dedicated to automotive glass, the company expects to create 2,000 jobs once both plants become fully operational.

Luis Alvarez, Saint-Gobain’s legal and communications director in Mexico, said the intention with this second project is to start operations at the end of 2018, along with its other development, Saint Gobain Securité, which is already under construction.

"On December 4 we will host a ceremony for our second project," Alvarez explained during a press conference, "the first, which is automotive glass, is already on the way, it is a large plant but not as much as the furnace that we are about to start building."

The production capacity of both plants will be announced on December 4 by Patrick Dupin, global executive president of the glass division of Saint-Gobain, who will lead the ground-breaking ceremony.

Saint Gobain started operations in Coahuila 10 years ago manufacturing high-performance plastics at a production site in Ramos Arizpe, less than 10 miles away from where the company acquired 55 hectares to build its second facility.

Saint Gobain currently owns 8 plants in Mexico. Aside from the Ramos Arizpe facility, its Abrasives division operates two plants in Reynosa and Tijuana.

The company also manufactures automotive glass in Cuautla, Morelos, and owns a residential glass operation in Cuautitlan, State of Mexico. Another two facilities in Tlaxcala manufacture glass thread for textile applications and a production site for construction materials is located in San Luis Potosi.
