Infiniti starts production test runs at Mexican plant

Nissan’s premium Brand Infiniti has begun production test runs at its new production facility in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and its expected to officially start operations by late November, state-owned news outlet Notimex revealed.

The news agency also confirmed the QX50 compact SUV to be the first model to roll out of the US$ 1.2 billion production facility built by a joint venture between Infiniti and Mercedes Benz. It’s worth noticing that the original plan was to build three different models at the plant, but nowadays it’s unclear if that goal is still pursued.

The Cooperation Manufacturing Plant Aguascalientes (COMPAS) is expected to build 300,000 units a year at full capacity, 150,000 vehicles from each brand, with Mercedes-Benz scheduled to begin operations next year. The facility will have a 5,700-strong workforce once is fully operational.

While COMPAS will be Mercedes-Benz first light vehicles manufacturing operation in Mexico, it also represents a significant addition to Nissan’s footprint in the country, which currently includes three production plants with an 800,000 vehicles-a-year capacity and 14,000 workers.
