Owens Corning to end composite production in Mexico

Ohio-based glass fiber manufacturer Owens Corning announced it will close three operations in the U.S., Mexico and China.
“The decision had to do with excess shipping and transportation costs of finished goods and materials,” said a spokesperson to media outlets in Brunswick, Maine, home to one of the facilities facing closure.
Along with the Brunswick plant, where 60 workers make composite parts for the wind power industry, Owens Corning will be winding down operations in Doudian, China, where the company employs 175 workers, and Mexico City, where a 125-workers operation manufactures composite materials.
The first layoffs likely won’t happen before December 31, but all three plants will be shuttered within a year.
The company also owns production facilities in Mexicali, Baja California; Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon; San Luis Potosi and Tlaxcala.
