GM consolidates Chevrolet Equinox production at Ramos Arizpe plant

General Motors decided to consolidate Mexican production of the Chevrolet Equinox at the Ramos Arizpe assembly plant to make more room for GMC Terrain capacity at the San Luis Potosi facility, local media revealed.

GM initially assigned the San Luis Potosi plant to build 100,000 units a year, while an additional 80,000 SUVs would roll out of Ramos Arizpe, but according to Saltillo’s news outlet Zócalo, the Coahuila assembly will handle all the capacity from now on.

Starting October 2, the Ramos Arizpe facility will dedicate two shifts, six days a week, to build around 34 units each hour, an output which is expected to increase in the near term.

General Motors faces pressure to keep a robust inventory of Equinox, its second best-selling vehicle after the Chevrolet Silverado, due to a strike which started two weeks ago at the automaker’s Ingersoll plant in Ontario, Canada, a facility that builds 850 units each day.
