Second round of NAFTA renegotiations starts in Mexico City

With 25 working groups, round two of NAFTA renegotiations started Friday in Mexico City, where trade representatives from Canada and the United States gathered with their Mexican counterparts amid persistent threats by President Donald Trump to terminate the pact.

There’s good chances all parts involved may agree on some topics such as e-commerce and support for small businesses, Mexican officials considered. But there’s also sticking points in the agenda, including U.S. demands to modify NAFTA's dispute resolution process, tighten labor standards and the so-called rules of origin, Mexico's Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo told the Senate at a hearing this week.

Other topics to be discussed during the 5-day period of talks also include the environment, anti-corruption measures and copyright protections for franchises.

Guajardo will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on the final day of the talks on Sept. 5 and then hold a joint press conference. A third round of talks will take place in Canada later in September.
