Mexican auto sales drop 7.3% in July; year-to-date deliveries still up 1.4%

Mexican auto dealers sold 122,110 light vehicles in the seventh month of 2017, 7.3% less units tan the 131,764 vehicles delivered in July 2016. Total sales from January through July still represent a 1.4% increase to 865,161 vehicles from 853,620 units sold during the same seven-month period from 2016, according to figures from the Mexican Association of Auto Dealers (AMDA for its acronym in Spanish). 

Nissan, the biggest auto seller in Mexico with a 24.5% market share in July, reported a sales decline of 14.9% to 28,267 units. Year-to-date sales for the Japanese automaker totaled 211,832 vehicles, down 1.1% compared to the same seven-month period of 2016. Its premium brand Infiniti sold 127 units, representing a -31.7% drop. Year-to-date sales totaled 1,115 vehicles or 7.2% less than previous year.

General Motors, second biggest seller in the country with a 16.5% market share in July, saw its sales sink 21.7% to 19,693 vehicles. Sales from January through July totaled 142,943 units, down 10.5% compared to the same period of 2016. GM figures include those from the brands Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac.

Volkswagen retained a 15.8% market share in July with 17,251 vehicles sold, including its brands Audi, Seat and Porsche, a 1.4% decrease compared to same month of 2016. Year-to-date sales totaled 112,520 units, a 2.7% decline.

Toyota kept a 6.8% market share with sales of 7,847 units, representing a 5.3% drop. Year-to-date sales for the Japanese automaker totaled 59,160 cars and light trucks, an increase of 9.1%. Figures from Toyota only include its main brand, Lexus vehicles are not for sale in Mexico.

FCA México, which includes the brands Dodge, Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram and Mitsubishi, saw a two-digit jump of 11.1% in July to 8,459 units, representing a 6.6% market share. Year-to-date sales increased 4.9% to 56,883 vehicles.

Honda retained a 5.8% market share to sales of 6,612 vehicles, down 4.8% compared to July 2016. Year-to-date sales totaled 50,339 units, up 6.9%. Its luxury brand Acura sold 160 units last month, a 0.6% increase. Year-to-date sales maintained a 9.0% advance to 1,182 units.

Kia, with just two years of presence in the Mexican market, is now the seventh best-selling brand as it holds a 5.6% market share. The Korean automaker sold 7,254 vehicles in July, a 31.7% hike. Year-to-date sales boosted 66.5% to 48,309 units. Its sister brand Hyundai sold 3,337 units, representing a 9.3% increase and a 2.8% market share. Hyundai’s year-to-date totaled 23,898 vehicles or a 20.6% jump. 

Ford sales sank 19.4% to 6,732 cars and light trucks in July, representing a 5.4% market share. Year-to-date sales totaled 46,845, also a drop of 10%. Its luxury brand Lincoln reported sales of 108 units and year-to-date sales of 836 vehicles, figures that represented drops of 48.3% and 37.1% respectively.

Mazda sold 4,476 vehicles in July, representing a 3.4% market share and an 8.8% increase compared to same month of 2016. Its year-to-date sales saw a small advance of 0.6% to 29,593 units.

French automaker Renault reported sales of 2,419 units in July and 15,934 vehicles during the firsts seven months of 2017, representing declines of 4.4% and 2.7% respectively. 

On the premium segment, Mercedes-Benz sold 1,109 units in July, down 12.9% compared to same month of 2016. Year-to-date sales remain strong with a 28% increase to 9,535 vehicles. Mercedes-Benz figures might differ from those in its global monthly report because the company does not reveal sales of certain high-end models to the AMDA.

BMW sold 1,432 vehicles last month, a 19.1% hike compared to the 1,202 units from July 2016. Year-to-date sales totaled 9,299 vehicles, representing a 17.4% jump. Its subsidiary Mini sold 528 units in July and totaled year-to-date sales of 3,398 vehicles, which meant increases of 10% and 6.6% respectively.

Audi sold 1,080 vehicles last month, representing a double-digit drop of 21.4%. Year-to-date sales dropped 7.9% to 8,060 units.
