New Ford transmission plant starts operations on low-profile mode

Ford’s new transmission plant in Irapuato, Guanajuato, officially started operations last Thursday July 20 with no ceremony in place, according to El Universal.

The plant was built with a US$ 1.2 billion investment in the premises of supplier Getrag creating 2,000 new permanent jobs.

“We are told that the president and CEO of Ford Mexico, Gabriel Lopez, chose not to do any opening ceremony or special announcement, let alone inviting the press,” said El Universal.

People familiar with the situation said the company did not want to bring attention from President Donald Trump specially when the U.S., Canada and Mexico are about to start the NAFTA renegotiation.

The opening takes place amid reports of several Ford dealerships in Mexico facing low sales because of a branding crisis which started after the company decided to scratch off plans to build an assembly plant in San Luis Potosi.
