U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry visited Mexico today to meet with his counterpart, Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, and talk about ways to promote cross-border electricity trade and investment.

The meeting comes as the two countries ready for a renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Coldwell said his country plans two pipelines to import U.S. natural gas in addition to the 17 that already exist.

Perry said it was a top priority to ensure a North American energy strategy, develop untapped resources and diversify energy supplies.

Joaquin underscored the need to modify rules governing electricity markets to create incentives for cross-border electricity trade with the United States, and said he had agreed with Perry to foment the pacific use of nuclear energy.

There are currently 17 natural gas pipelines and two more are under construction, while the exchange of electricity between the two countries in 2016 amounted to 3,781 GW.
