Here’s how sales of Mexico-made cars ended up in the US market during June

Auto sales for Mexico-made vehicles in the U.S. market remain affected by the trend of customers choosing SUVs over sedans and compact cars during June, except for few cases, according to figures released by each company.

The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle from certain model was built in Mexico. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Audi

Audi of America reported a June sales increase of 5.3% to 19,416 vehicles, as the all-new Q5 and the all-new A5 Sportback helped drive the demand. June was the 78th consecutive month of record sales for Audi of America and the third-best sales month in the brand’s U.S. history. Through the first half of the year, Audi has sold 102,971 vehicles in the U.S., up 6.2% and more than in any full year prior to 2010.

Sales of the built-in-Puebla Q5 SUV totaled 4,498 vehicles, up 1.8% compared to previous year. During the first half of 2017 the Q5 sales totaled 25,747 units, up 17.1% against same period of 2016.

FCA

FCA US LLC reported sales of 187,348 units, a 7% decrease compared with sales in June 2016 (202,421 units). In June, retail sales of 139,947 units were down 5% compared with the same month in 2016, and represented 75% of total sales. Fleet sales of 47,401 units were down 15% year over year.

Sales of the Toluca-made Jeep Compass totaled 8,311 units during the fourth month since its arrival to exhibit rooms. The Dodge Journey sales plunged 51% to 6,073 units in June, but increased 19% to 56,877 units for the first half of 2017. Ram sales increased 5% to 43,073 units in June, and 7% to 250,443 pickups during the first semester.

Ford

Ford Motor Company’s overall U.S. sales for June totaled 227,979 vehicles, down 5.1% compared to last year. Retail results ended up flat to 152,396 vehicles, while fleet sales totaled 75,583 units, representing a 13.9% loss versus a year ago.

Sales of Ford Fiesta fell 0.9% in June to 4,026 units and dropped 3.8% during the first half of 2017 to 24,580 vehicles. The Ford Fusion sales totaled 18,139 units in June and 107,225 in the first semester, down 31.6% and 27% respectively. The Lincoln MKZ sales totaled 2,240 units in June and 14,342 in the first half, down 18.8% and 2.4% respectively.

General Motors reported June U.S. retail sales of 202,908 vehicles, down 3.1% from the same period last year. Last May, production for the all-new Chevrolet Equinox started in two Mexican facilities. GM reported 29,182 units delivered in June over the U.S. market.

GM sold in June 12,828 Cruze, including sedan and hatchback versions, down 31.28% compared to June 2016. Silverado sales grew 1.72% to 50,515 units, GMC Sierra sales fell 8.3% to 15,743 units and Sonic sales sank 13.6% to 6,550 units. June marked the end for Sonic production in Mexico, according to local sources. The Chevrolet Trax sales increased 1.6% to 5,887 units.

Honda

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported total June sales of 139,793 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 0.8% over June 2016. Honda Division was down 1.3% on sales of 125,755 units, while the Acura Division gained 23.7% on sales of 14,038 vehicles.

The compact hatchback Fit performed a 11.7% drop, totaling 4,444 units. For the first half of 2017 the Fit totaled sales of 26,322 units, down 3.9%. On the other hand, sales of the HR-V crossover skyrocketed 35.1% to 8,872 units. Year-to-date sales for the HR-V totaled 46,628 units, up 27.9% compared to the first half of 2016.

Kia/Hyundai

Kia Motors America announced June sales of 56,143 units, 10.3% less than a year before. Meanwhile its sister brand Hyundai totaled 52,894 vehicles including its premium brand Genesis, meaning a 19% drop.

The Kia Forte family reported June sales of 11,387 units, a 24.1% hike. Year-to-date sales totaled 58,746 vehicles, up 11.3%. Sales of Kia Rio dropped to just 963 units, 81.6% less than the 5,238 vehicles from a year ago. Year-to-date sales totaled 6,685 units, down 56.5% from 15,368 vehicles from the first half of 2016. Sales of the Hyundai Accent, also built in Nuevo Leon, totaled 5,028 units, up 60%. Year-to-date sales totaled 32,515 vehicles, down 17.3%.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported June U.S. sales of 22,342 vehicles, representing a decrease of 14.7% versus June of last year. Year-to-date sales through June are down 2.6% versus last year, with 141,624 vehicles sold.

Sales for the Mazda3 totaled 6,473 units in June, down 22.9%, while year-to-date sales totaled 39,834 vehicles, 22.5% less than first half of 2016. The company combines sedan and hatchback sales for the Mazda3, but only the saloon version is built in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Nissan

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for June 2017 of 143,328 units, an increase of 2% over the prior year and a June record. The Nissan Division reported 131,057 units sold, up 1.2% from previous year, while the Infiniti brand sold 12,271 units, a 11% hike.

Nissan sold 8,155 units of its Versa compact car, including sedan and the hatchback version known as Versa Note, a 44.5% drop. Year-to-date sales for the Versa totaled 56,558 units, down 21.9%. As for the Nissan Sentra 22,534 units were sold in June, 8.7% more than the prior year. Year-to-date sales totaled 112,574 vehicles, 8.5% down compared to first half of 2016.

Toyota

Toyota Motor North America reported its U.S. June sales of 202,376 units, up 2.1% compared to same month of 2016. For the first half of 2017 sales totaled 1,155,165 units, down 3.6% versus the same period in 2016. The Toyota division posted June sales of 177,981 units, up 3.2%, Lexus posted sales of 24,395 units, down 5.4%.

The midsize pickup Tacoma, which is built both in San Antonio, Texas and Tijuana, Mexico, saw sales rise 4% to 16,443 units in June. For the year, Tacoma sales are down 0.5% to 94,596 units. The Yaris iA, built by Mazda in Guanajuato, totaled 2,990 units sold in June, up 1.7%. Year-to-date sales are 14.1% up to 18,748 units.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported sales of 27,377 units in June, a 15% increase over June 2016. From January through June 161,238 units were delivered, an increase of 8.2%. The whole Golf family saw monthly sales of 5,880 vehicles, an increase of 27.7%. Year-to-date sales totaled 38,247 vehicles, up 45.3%. The Jetta saw a 16% increase to 9,999 vehicles, and a 4.8% drop to 55,495 units in the first half. VW sold 1,587 Beetle cars in June, an increase of 43.6%. Year-to-date sales totaled 8,821 units, up 30.2%. Sales for the Tiguan SUV totaled 1,747 units in June, or 43% less, as VW prepares the arrival for the all-new model. Year-to-date sales totaled 16,965, down 17.5%.
