Auto freights in Mexican maritime ports increase 42%

Transit of finished vehicles in Mexican maritime ports increased 42% during the first five months of 2017, according to the latest figures made available by the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), the agency in control of trade infrastructure.

A total 667,881 vehicles passed through the seven ports designated to handle this type cargo in the country from January through May this year, compared to 470,350 units during the same five-month period of 2016.

Concerning the origin of those vehicles, 354,167 units were Mexican exports heading overseas, while the rest 313,714 were imports mostly from Asia and South America.

Auto exports through maritime ports increased 46.2%, compared to the 242,235 units mobilized in the same five-month period of 2016. Imports hiked 37.5% when compared to the 228,115 vehicles from last year.

Ports in the Gulf of Mexico displaced 466,732 vehicles, up 47.9% from 315,632 last year. Meanwhile, the Pacific precincts saw activity increase 30% to 201,149 units, from 154,718 cars in January-May 2016.

Mexico operates seven ports designated to trade of finished vehicles, which are Mazatlan, Manzanillo, Lazaro Cardenas and Acapulco in the Pacific Coast, while Veracruz, Altamira and Tuxpan serve the automotive industry in the Gulf of Mexico.
