Giant Motors, an automotive startup partially owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, is working to develop a full-electric taxi to help battle pollution in Mexico City.
The company has partnered with electric vehicle maker Moldex, a unit of Mexican bread maker Grupo Bimbo and four Mexican universities to produce an environmentally friendly car that will eventually replace part of the city's more than 130,000 registered cabs, said chief executive Elias Massri. Serial manufacturing would start in the Hidalgo plant in 2018, Massri added.
Over the last few years Giant Motors and Moldex have developed 500 light-weight, electric cargo trucks capable of handling one ton load. Massri said the experience has given them a platform for the taxi project.
