U.S. auto industry accelerated automation in 2016

The U.S. manufacturing industry installed 31,500 robots during 2016, out of those a new record of approximately 17,500 units went to the automotive sector, meaning auto plants acquired 43% more robots last year compared to 2015.

In the last seven years, the operational stock in the auto industry increased by about 52,100 units, from 74,900 to about 127,000, says a report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

In comparison, China installed about 90,000 industrial robots last year, according to preliminary results published by the Statistical Department of de IFR.
