The reform to the Foreign Investment Act was approved last December, in order to increase from 25% to 49% the maximum amount of participation permitted to foreign companies in Mexico's air sector. This will enable Delta Air Lines' acquisition of 49% of Grupo AeroMexico. Additionally, it will facilitate the capital purchase of Aeromar and Interjet by other foreign firms. According to Alfredo Rodriguez, President of the Transport Commission of the House of Representatives, the foreign air carriers' investment into Mexican airlines will upgrade the sector, which could see in the mid-term growth rates two or three-fold its current records. Experts estimated that operations will involve investment for over US$1.3 billion in this sector.
