German-based wind turbine supplier Nordex announced an agreement to build a 168-MW wind power plant for Acciona Energia in the Northern State of Tamaulipas.

The El Cortijo wind park, located 40 kilometers south of Reynosa border city, will use 56 units of AW125/3000 turbines with 120-metre (393.7 ft) towers to be delivered in 2017, according to a press release.

Once up and running in 2018, the wind farm is expected to be able to generate enough electricity to power some 350,000 local households each year.

The local subsidiary of Spanish group Acciona SA was among the winners in Mexico's energy auction in April when it was awarded a contract for 585.7 GWh, to be produced by the El Cortijo wind farm. The energy output will be supplied to state-owned Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) for a 15-year period.

Currently, Acciona Energia operates 556.5 MW of wind turbines in Mexico. A total of 860 MW of AW turbines are hooked to the Mexican grid.
